Since the prehistoric times, humans have considered birds as fascinating creatures. Therefore, many activities such as bird watching, domestication, shooting for pleasure, etc developed around the world. As such, there is a huge demand for the information on bird species, their behaviour and their distribution, etc. The traditional source of such information was the published media. In recent years, with the advent of electronic communication through ‘World wide web” this resulted in revolutionizing the information availability. It has made information accessibility more convenient and easy.

Sri Lanka harbors 227 resident bird species including 26 definitive endemic birds. With the migrant species and vagrants recorded from the island, the number increases to 482. Sri Lanka is identified as an Endemic Bird Area (EBA) and the number of endemic species present in the EBA is the highest in Asia. FOGSL believes that access to information is the key to the better understanding appreciation and conservation of birds

This web site provides information for all the recorded species in Sri Lanka. It gives distribution maps and photographs or illustrations for every species. Species descriptions are given in the Sinhala language for all the species too.

However, for many species in Sri Lanka we are lacking critical information of exact distribution, breeding period, etc. You can help us to improve this data base by providing information to FOGSL. We encourage you to use and record your observations in Worldbirds system (www.worldbirds.org/srilanka) which will improve the information base of the birds.
